FCC Narrowbanding FAQ
- What does narrowbanding mean?
- It simply means that all VHF and UHF radios change to at least 12.5 kHz efficient technology by the mandated date of January 1, 2013. This allows a more effecient use of the spectrum in the future.
- Which frequencies are affected by the narrowbanding mandate?
- As of now, the ranges affected are 150-174 Mhz and 412-512 Mhz.
- What happens if I don't comply with the mandate by 1/1/13?
- The FCC considers noncompliance as a violation that might lead to the FCC interviening with fines, loss or license, or adonishment. Therefore, it is very important to be in compliance and Kentucky Advanced Communications can help answer any questions and make sure you are in compliance.
- Do I need to change frequencies in order to comply?
- Not at all. You will stay on the same frequency however the bandwidth of the channel will be smaller (from 25 kHz to 12.5 kHz) and change the emission designator on the license.
